This morning I decided to join Project 333. It was a little last minute, but it started today so I’m not technically a latecomer. If you don’t know what it is, Project 333 comes from Courtney of Be More with Less. It is a minimalist fashion project in which the participants choose to live with only 33 clothing and accessory items for 3 months, from October 1st to December 31st.
When I decided to go for it this morning, I went straight for my closet and started pulling stuff. Fashion isn’t really my thing, and I don’t work outside the home so I kind of feel like I have it easier than others. Thanks to my minimalist efforts, all of the clothes I own easily fit in the closet at once. I started by pulling out my summer clothes. After that is was a matter of choosing which jeans, t-shirts, cardigans, and sneakers to keep in use. That is pretty much my uniform. Boring to some, but I love it and it requires little thought.
Here’s what I decided on:
- silver tree ring
- beaded bracelet
- beaded earrings
- winter coat
- converse- brown
- uggs- brown
- cashmere wrap-brown
- cotton scarf
- hair scarf
- stocking cap
- fingerless gloves
- back pack purse
- small purse
- belt
- jeans
- jeans
- jeans
- cardigan- green
- cardigan- brown
- cardigan- purple
- cardigan- navy
- hoodie- grey zip
- hoodie- red pullover
- plaid button up shirt
- t shirt- grey
- t shirt- brown
- t shirt- red
- 3/4 t shirt- red
- 3/4 t shirt- pink
- long t shirt- white
- long t shirt- brown
- long t shirt- tan
- henley- brown
I have sweats, underwear, etc. but they don’t count according to the rules. Same with my wedding ring. I didn’t count my silver cuff bracelet, a wedding gift from my husband, because I don’t take it off and consider it to be part of my body!
If you’re curious, here are a few interesting facts about my list:
- Only 6 items on my list were purchased by me, brand new. The other 27 items were gifts, second hand, or hand made.
- All three of my short sleeve t shirts have either Mickey Mouse or Minnie Mouse on them. There are more, too, I just couldn’t choose any more for this experiment!
- I do not own a single article of clothing or pair of shoes in black.
- I am growing out my hair from super short and bleached so I had to use one of my spots for a scarf specifically to cover it on the really bad days! Coincidentally, this is also why my picture doesn’t appear on this blog yet. Just a couple more weeks and I should be ready to be photographed!
There you have it. I hope to get rid of a lot of the stuff I have set aside when it’s over in January. I’ll let you know how I do on the Facebook page for Project 333 and on Twitter.

Have fun with this project! I’m just a bystander this time since I’m very post-partum right now and probably don’t even have 33 items that fit me. It is making me inspired to go through and purge more clothes though.
Congratulations Melanie! It is an inspiring project, even though I’m just a jeans and t-shirt kind of girl. I’m thinking of switching some of the items I haven’t worn yet for more accessories!
[...] decided on the morning of October first to participate and quickly packed away all but 33 items. Six days in I realized that I needed my sunglasses and a necklace so I swapped them in for a pair [...]
